Semrush recently monitored their database of 2 billion queries to determine which keywords faced the least competition in Google's search engine.
The idea behind this is that they can identify which phrases are currently underutilized to help companies find some gems when it comes to building keyword research.
In addition to this, they also looked at the other side of highly competitive keywords. Learn how people behave on search engines and what common phrases are.
We reviewed the study and summarised the key findings for UK and US e-commerce retailers.

Key Findings from the Semrush Keyword Competition Study
US
The U.S. buyer keywords with the lowest competition and highest search volume were ' affordable plumbing ' and ' affordable storage '.
The most competitive and least searched transactional keywords in the U.S. are ' buy online on Amazon ' and ' buy online buy baby '.
The most competitive products are laptops , TVs, cars, beds, masks and toilet paper in the US.
The most popular brands in the US are Apple , Google , Zillow , Nintendo and Best Buy .
Price Inquiry UK and US both focus on branded electrical products such as Xbox , Airport , iPhone and PLAYSTATION .
The UK is very different from the US. As you can imagine, the monthly search volume (MSV) is much less. There are also significantly more service-based phrases, such as SEO , accounting, and TikTok opinion.
UK
The UK's least contested and most searched deal terms were ' best affordable cordless vacuum' and ' best affordable TV '.
The most competitive products are Cordless Vacuums, Cars/Vehicles, Bungalows, Pajamas and Sportswear in the UK.
The most popular brands are eBay, Right Move, Tesco, Apple and Netflix in the UK

Semrush's research highlights the importance of "near me" searches.
COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the number of searches that include "near me" on Google. With restrictions meaning people can't travel far, buyers have been looking for items close to them.
It's also encouraging that competition for these searches is still fairly low, but they're now seeing high volume due to the pandemic. In the US, the 4th and 6th pandemic phrases contain this modifier.

This is the same as the UK, where 2 phrases are also in the top 10. The "near me" modifier is in first place.

There are very interesting differences between the UK and the US when it comes to Google Search.
Affordable is the best performing modifier of the 8 modifiers that Semrush has selected for the US market. It appeared in 10 out of 7 searches for high volume/low contention.
For the UK, however, it only appeared twice. Their modifiers are more diverse with low competition UK "cheap" most popular modifiers are 3 in the top 10.
Competition is fierce
While the affordable modifier works well in the US, it's the exact opposite in the UK. Every high competition phrase in the UK top 10 featured the word 'affordable'.
